Cushions are getting bigger so 50x50 cushions covers are perfect to start with, and maybe throw in a one off different size on each sofa. Minimum 3 cushions per sofa, more if you have CUSHION LOVE like me, keep then in groups either in the corners or in the middle.
Cushions are so important when finishing a room, whether its for on the bed or the sofa and chairs they are a way to introduce colour, texture, pattern. They bring to life tired sofas and chairs or living room entirely.
Colour selection comes from pulling a colour from your art or favourite accessory or rug in that room.
Make up a combination using different patterns, graphics, size, cooler and texture. Geometric is huge at the moment, they come in all colours including pastels and metallic which is huge at the moment. Centre of the sofa bunched together.
Feather inners are a must to give the cushions great structure and bulk they cost a little more however make a huge difference, its all designers use. Fibre fill inners make them flat and they don’t sit up right.
Do not overload your sofas, put so many cushions on the sofa so you cannot sit down without having to put them on the floor, a lot of magazines show numerous cushions on the sofas which photograph fabulously however are not practical when it comes to living with them, so keep that in mind when working through your combinations.
Piping is being used again on cushions pulling out a contrast colour and maybe another fabric like velvet to pipe a linen cushion in for example. Mix pattern fabric with plain block colouring on other cushions.
Do back and front in different colours.
Half and half on the front also makes for an interesting cushion.
I suggest you go to a store and have a play with them arranging your favourite cushions on a sofa that looks similar to yours at home, buying them online can be a little risky if you don't have the confidence with the combination.
Custom made cushions are big in my industry, as some clients wish a look specific and unique to them and there space, as a designer we can really bring the room together and finish it off by clever fabric selection through cushions.
To keep your living room fresh and up do date, you can have several looks using various cushion combinations which you can rotate every few months to keep your room looking fresh and fabulous. Don't store your cushions with the inner in them as they become bulky and we all need extra storage space, so wash them and store them flat until you need them next season.
